Peavey 5150 Noise Issue – SHUT IT UP!
I love my Peavey 5150 EVH Blockletter but it is a noisy S.O.B. when idling. Some people actually like that annoying hissing sound. I on the other hand like my amp to STFU when I am not playing it. This is especially true with metal that may have a lot of stops and intermittent rhythm parts. The “hiss” gets even more predominant when you have an overdrive pedal running before the amp.
So what is the solution? The Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor is one of the greatest STFU pedals ever, especially for the 5150/6505 and 5150ii/6505+ amps. BTW, The following configuration can work for any amp with an effects loop.
The typical set up is to go GUITAR —> OVERDRIVE —> NS-2 —> AMP INPUT. That is great if you want to hush your overdrive but what do you do about the noise that is native in the amp? The beauty of the BOSS NS-2 above other noise suppressors is that there is an internal effects loop in the pedal that helps the pedal interpret static noise from guitar noise. So, this is how I hook up the NS-2 to make this amp DEAD QUIET!
1st. Connect your guitar to the INPUT of the NS-2 if you have overdrive or a wah then put that in between your guitar and the INPUT of the NS-2.
2nd. Connect a chord to the SEND (bottom left jack on the NS-2) and then connect that chord to the Input of your amp!
3rd. Connect a chord from your FX Loop SEND to the RETURN (bottom right jack on the NS-2).
4th. Connect a chord from your FX Loop RETURN to the OUTPUT (top left jack on the NS-2).
The settings I use on the pedal are:
MODE: Reduction
THRESHOLD: Max
Decay: Min
Tweak the settings to your taste. I use these extreme settings on the pedal because I am usually playing pretty loudly. If I turn down my amp volume then I will adjust the THRESHOLD a bit.
